1 00:00:00,160 --> 00:00:02,190 This will be my first Christmas in Brisbane. 2 00:00:02,948 --> 00:00:05,309 The weather here has certainly been warm, 3 00:00:05,309 --> 00:00:07,294 but so has the welcome I've received 4 00:00:07,294 --> 00:00:08,935 for which I'm very grateful. 5 00:00:10,072 --> 00:00:14,826 This year is also the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, 6 00:00:14,826 --> 00:00:18,868 which gave us a clear definition of Jesus as truly divine 7 00:00:18,868 --> 00:00:21,601 rather than just a special messenger sent by God. 8 00:00:22,518 --> 00:00:25,098 Its wording is contained in the Nicene Creed 9 00:00:25,098 --> 00:00:26,805 which we use at Sunday Mass. 10 00:00:28,556 --> 00:00:32,853 Proclaiming Jesus as the son of God is particularly significant at Christmas 11 00:00:32,853 --> 00:00:34,428 when we celebrate His birth. 12 00:00:35,481 --> 00:00:40,201 The humility and vulnerability of Jesus' birth in the stable of Bethlehem 13 00:00:40,201 --> 00:00:43,162 is just as much part of God's self-revelation 14 00:00:43,162 --> 00:00:45,409 as is Jesus walking on the water 15 00:00:45,409 --> 00:00:47,684 or being glorified in the transfiguration. 16 00:00:49,360 --> 00:00:53,639 Jesus reveals a God who is not only transcendent and all powerful 17 00:00:53,639 --> 00:00:55,794 but also intimately close to us. 18 00:00:56,560 --> 00:00:59,418 Jesus takes on our very flesh and blood 19 00:00:59,418 --> 00:01:02,459 entering fully into our human experience 20 00:01:02,459 --> 00:01:05,661 even to the point of His suffering and death on the cross. 21 00:01:07,352 --> 00:01:10,750 The God of Jesus Christ is not one who is remote, 22 00:01:10,750 --> 00:01:13,427 distant, and inaccessible to us, 23 00:01:13,427 --> 00:01:15,840 but one who accompanies us always, 24 00:01:15,840 --> 00:01:19,520 even on the darkest and most difficult parts of our human journey. 25 00:01:21,043 --> 00:01:23,644 We need to hear again the Christmas proclamation 26 00:01:23,644 --> 00:01:25,414 that God is with us. 27 00:01:27,021 --> 00:01:31,301 In Jesus' birth, God enters utterly into our human experience 28 00:01:31,301 --> 00:01:34,620 so that everything about our lives can be taken up 29 00:01:34,620 --> 00:01:37,750 and transformed in His divine life. 30 00:01:39,501 --> 00:01:41,655 I wish you and your families 31 00:01:41,655 --> 00:01:44,213 the peace, hope and joy 32 00:01:44,213 --> 00:01:45,672 of this Christmas season.
